Why did you press the shutter when you did?
Not because the light was beautiful
Not because the composition was perfect
Why THAT moment ?
Why not the one before....OR... the one after?
Every photograph begins with a decision
And they are rarely random
Sometimes they are shaped by curiosity
Sometimes by fear
Sometimes by the need to hold onto something we think we are about to lose
The camera doesn't just reveal the world
Sometimes, it reveals us..
Those stories, beliefs and identities we have carried with us for many years
Some stories we have carried since we were little, other we learned from our teenage years, others in our 20's
We can pick up stories at any age
The work is putting them down once we recognise them, as if carrying a rucksack on our back full of bricks.
The weight can become tiring and cause resentment, pain and a feeling of lack, fear, anxiety, worry
The noticing is the first step
