The nervous system and your inner landscape
A short and straight to the point blog post from me today on how to reconnect when you are feeling lost and end up doing so many things for others, yet put yourself last all the time, possibly because you were taught its a selfish thing to do, yet your needs are not met and that can be an issue in your response to life.
So what is your nervous system and how can you practice being more self aware?
Your autonomic nervous system runs the show, it governs all systems. Yet we are taught virtually nothing about it . A network of nerves that handle unconscious tasks like the heartbeat and breathing.
When I first began learning about the ANS a few years ago, I kept it simple for myself.
I imagined that inside of me was a tree with two branches.
One was the Sympathetic branch, which grew stress, worry, increase in heart rate, disease, pain, digestive issues, tension.
The other branch was the Parasympathetic, upon which grew calmness, relaxation, slow breathing, clarity of mind, kindfulness, awareness, healthy digestion.
Its not the aim of the ANS to be on that calming branch all the time , but to be able to switch between both, to live with both , without spending a huge amount of time on either branch.
A healthy regulated ANS will be able to do that.
How?
Mindfulness practices and movement.
Time outside away from screens, include the TV in that too.
Vagus nerve work ( more of that to follow in a future course)
My gift you to is a short practice to listen to when you are out walking or have a moment to yourself, maybe trying to find some sense in this world, maybe a relaxing calming way to wind down at the end of the day.
Click the word Enjoy and listen.
